This program offers daily supervised structured activities for the frail and socially impaired elderly, giving them an opportunity for stimulation and new friendships. Those appropriate to attend are individuals who are experiencing difficulty with tasks of every day living and are partially dependent on others. Free Medical Alert / Emergency Alert Systems

The Office for the Aging may be able to provide an elderly person with a medical alert system at no cost. Check with the office to see if you’re eligible.

Heating Assistance

The winters are cold up in Saratoga and Angelo Losavio says that seniors who are struggling to afford heat should look into HEAP.  Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program which can help low income people contend with the high cost of heating their homes during the winter months. HEAP provides a one-time benefit per heating season which is credited to your heating account. Persons 60 years of age and older may apply for a regular benefit by mail through the Office for the Aging. There are income eligibility requirements for this program.

The HEAP emergency benefit component assists qualifying low-income New Yorkers who are facing a heat or heat related energy emergency and do not have the resources available to resolve the emergency. The emergency benefit component of 2011-2012 HEAP opened January 3, 2012 and will close Friday, April 13, 2012.
