Dementia and Wandering

People with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are at risk of injury and death from wandering, also know as elopement.

Dealing With Dementia; Finding Lost People vs. Preventing Wandering

Dementia care giving can be exhausting. The victim of dementia can be unpredictable. They can suddenly change sleep behavior and wander off in the middle of the night. You may think they’re sound asleep while you take a bathroom break only to find out they’ve gotten out of the house.

The statistics for people with dementia are depressing. Many are never found. While some states have a Silver Alert program (similar to Amber Alerts for lost children) to help quickly locate lost dementia victims – the best solution is prevention. If you can prevent your elderly loved one from leaving the house unattended your much better off.

Some ways people try to prevent wandering are:

Institutionalizing Your Loved One. This is the toughest solution but may be your only choice. It’s expensive and traumatic and while it may be inevitable for some, it is possible to post-pone it. There are cases of senior homes and nursing facilities losing patients every year.

24 Hour Caregiver. Having a professional home health aide to supervise the patient can drastically reduce the chances of losing your loved one to wandering. Of course, this can be expensive and not entirely fool-proof. Dementia patients may seem to be at low-risk one day and not show any signs of wandering until it’s too late.

Modify Your Home. Some caregivers will cover up or disguise exits to discourage wandering. Others will change the locks so they can only be opened with a key. I’d consult with my local fire department as this could quickly become the formula for disaster.

Dementia Wandering Alarms. Get a reliable alarm system that will alert you when the patient goes outside the home. These systems can sound an alarm and /or call you (and several other phone numbers) to alert you of a possible wandering issue.
