Filling the Gap with Medicare Supplement Plans

We all struggle with change. And although it is unwelcomed, avoided, or just ignored, change is hard to resist. And while you may be one of those people who would rather batten down the hatches and wait for the storm to pass, the current changes to Medicare are topics you do not want to ignore.

With the current overhaul of the Medicare program, various details in your plan including benefits and enrollment rules will be affected beginning next year. Depending on your individual needs, you, or someone you know, may want to consider reevaluating your healthcare coverage and consider Medicare Supplemental insurance, otherwise know as Medigap.

According to Medicare.gov, the official website for Medicare, Medigap insurance is health insurance sold by private insurance companies to fill the gaps in the Original Medicare Plan coverage.

We all know that the government is struggling to implement a viable health care option for Americans, and we have especially experienced Medicare falling apart. Costs are rising, and you don’t feel like you’re getting any more coverageyou may even be getting less. But even lawmakers in Washington, D.C. have parents and grandparents, and our government is trying to fill in where your coverage is lacking.

These Medicare supplement policies help pay some of the health care costs that the Original Medicare Plan doesn’t cover. If you are currently enrolled in the Original Medicare Plan and have a Medigap policy, then Medicare and your Medigap policy will pay both their shares of covered health care costs. It’s like a patch on the government’s worn out and frayed coverage of those who need it. Medicare supplement policies help pay extra hospital costs, cover prescription drug prices, and provide coverage you need that may be lacking in your current Medicare plan.

But let’s be honest with ourselvesit’s the government, and problems may be expected. You can avoid the problems, but it takes a watchful eye at the beginning. In order to avoid possible problems with your plans, make sure to consult your insurance company before switching your healthcare plan. Insurance companies are required to explain to you exactly what you will get when you buy an insurance plan, so don’t be afraid to speak up if you have questions about your Medicare supplement plan.

You are entitled to be informed about your healthcare. Take charge of your coverage and make sure that these upcoming changes won’t affect your life or the life of someone you care for.
