Greener Homes for Seniors

Some people use age as an excuse to escape responsibility. Teens would say they are too young while the more senior ones would say they are too old. Age is but a number. No one is too young or too old to do their part in caring for the environment. For seniors who are keen to join the green bandwagon, here are some things you can do to make your home more eco-friendly.

Use Solar Panels

Installing solar panels on your roof is a great start to making your home green and energy-saving. Depending on how many panels you install, you might be able to generate enough electricity to light up your house and other appliances you may need at night. For older people who may have trouble installing the solar panels themselves, get a younger neighbor or your children to help you. Or not, get your grandchildren to help out so that you can also teach them on the importance of having an energy-saving home.

Go Green

If you don’t have a garden, it’s about time to start one. If you have more plants around, it actually helps make your surroundings a little cooler. If you make a compost pit for your own fertilizer, it’s already a great help in lessening garbage. Growing your own organic vegetables and fruits also works in your favor as it helps you live a healthier lifestyle by eating healthy food. Gardening is also a good hobby that keeps you active and is extremely fulfilling especially when your harvest came from your hard work and care.

Conserve Energy

One of the things that make a home eco-friendly is its energy-saving capabilities. One quick way to do this is through your appliances. If your refrigerator is over a decade old, it’s probably time to switch it to a newer model that uses less energy. Change your incandescent light bulbs with low-energy lightbulbs. Invest in an energy-saving thermostat because setting temperature even just one degree lower already makes a difference in your energy bills. Remember to turn off appliances that are not in use. Never leave your computer or your television set on overnight since they consume a lot of energy. If you keep on forgetting, set it on timer so they automatically turn off at a specific time, especially when you’re about to sleep.

Use Natural Gas

When the solar energy you collected isn’t enough to generate the electricity you need, use natural gas in heating up your home. Natural gas gives off zero emissions, so it’s definitely cleaner and greener compared to gasoline. If you have a car, you can show further support to Mother Nature by switching to an environmentally friendly model that runs on natural gas.You can also compromise with a hybrid car that runs on either gasoline or natural gas. Look it up in the directory for retailers for natural gas to see if there is one near your area. Local energy retailers usually offer cost effective plans that will allow you to cut down on your energy bills.
