Reviewing Extra Care Homes

At some age in life, people find it difficult to perform daily chores, including taking care of one’s self. It is for this reason that we have nursing homes, adult day care, assisted living, hospice care, home care, among other establishments to take care of the senior citizens. There is a wide variety of elderly care in the world, with all emphasizing on the personal and social requirements of the senior citizens. As a senior citizen you need some assistance with your daily activities as well as health care.

The senior housing sector has really grown since the 1990s. New forms of retirement housing and sheltered housing have come up in the recent years, to take care of the older people who are less able to take care, or do everything for themselves. Many people are familiar with the care homes, but nowadays there has been the emergence of Extra Care Housing (an alternative to care homes).

ExtraCare Care Homes are housing designed specifically to serve or suit the frailer older people. These establishments have varying levels of support and care on site. With Extra Care Housing, you have your own self-contained home as well as your own front door. Extra Care Housing comes in many forms, including bungalow estates, blocks of flats and retirement villages.

Extra Care Homes have more facilities than the usual care homes. In addition to guest suite, resident’s lounge and laundry, Extra Care Homes often have a dining room or a restaurant, hobby rooms, health and fitness facilities as well as computer rooms. There is usually some onsite staff to provide personal care and domestic support. These properties are either owned, part owned or rented. The number of such properties is limited, but the number is increasing. Currently many providers have set the eligibility criteria that have to be met by prospective residents.

Whether you buy or rent a unit within the Extra Care Homes or other elderly care facilities, there are some monthly charges or fees. This monthly fee increases depending on level of care that you require.

There are many forms of senior housing to choose from. Therefore, as you assess your senior housing or care and plan for either the Extra Care Housing or other forms of elderly care, there are a number of factors that you need to consider. You should consider your social support and establish how easy (or hard) it is for you to visit your family, friends and neighbours. If you realize it is difficult for you to leave the house, you need to consider moving into a senior housing before isolation and depression sets in. Other factors to consider include your medical condition or history and the level of care that you need, your location and accessibility, finances, among other factors.

You need to consider a form of home or housing where your current as well as future needs will be met.

While most elderly care facilities are private, there are countries that have government established care homes to cater for the senior citizens.
