Medical Alert Systems for Seniors

Today’s post shares some tips on ways you can make life better better for the shut-in or home-bound senior citizen.

A medical alert system (also called a senior medical emergency alarm … there are a number of different terms) is a safety line between the elderly user and help. Without a good senior alert system, a live-alone senior citizen can face serious harm.  If they’ve fallen and can’t get up as the TV commercial says, who will be there to help them? If your mom or dad falls and can’t reach the telephone they could suffer aggravated injury and even death. There’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t buy a help system for your elderly relative.

These systems can be very inexpensive. A good service will cost about $30 a month for call button service. To operate, the injured or distressed user presses a button that triggers a monitor to dial a help center. The trained operator will attempt to speak to the caller and based on the conversation (or inability to speak to the caller) they will make the required calls to medical professionals, EMS, or contact a nearby friend, neighbor or relative. When you sign up for this service you will give the monitoring center a list of emergency contacts and instructions as to what they should do when a distress call comes is. You may also want to look into true medical monitoring. A true medical monitoring system can detect falls, heart rate, body temperature and movement.

With true fall detection the monitoring company can get help for you when you are unconscious or paralyzed. Some companies sell alerts with “fall detection” but they’re only helpful when the fall is violent. Trouble is, many times when people faint or go unconscious, they don’t drop like a sack of potatoes … many times they just slump to the ground.  True fall detection systems will notice when the person wearing the device slumps and remains motionless.

The medical monitor can also measure some basic vitals like heart rate and temperature. What is really wonderful about this system is you can monitor all this data yourself via a secure website.

Additionally, a good medical monitor can see if the wearer is moving around or confined to bed. If the system detects no motion, it could be a sign that the patient is not doing well.
