What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a type  of dementia that mostly affects the elderly.  This serious brain disorder seriously impacts an individual’s ability to function day to day.

Alzheimer’s begins quietly and follows a predictable path of destruction.  It starts by attacking the parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language. The AD victim starts having trouble remembering recent events and the names of people they’d normally recall. Through the course of years memory loss grows. Words are lost. The ability to remember relatives vanishes. Reading, writing, speaking, math and logic disappear.  The control of emotions and the ability to interpret reality leave the AD victim lost.

Alzheimer’s can strike at any age but it is most common after age 60. There is no cure for this horrible disease that affects 1 in 10 people over the age 65.

Alzheimer’s is a tragic disease for victims and their loved ones. Worldwide there are over 24 million people with AD – and that number will double in the next 20 years and then double again. It’s a fatal disease with no cure but requires years, even decades of medical care.  Alzheimer’s can bankrupt families and healthcare systems.
