Elder Care Monitoring Devices with Advanced Fall Detection

Wireless monitoring devices can make caring for seniors more affordable while improving quality of care for the elderly.

Most senior citizens want to age at home and not at a nursing home or other senior care facility. If you ask older Americans, they’d rather live on their own alone than with relatives. But living alone can create a whole host of problems.

Older adults are more prone to slip and fall due to a lack of balance, to generating muscular strength or medical conditions that may cause unconsciousness. A wireless medical monitoring system can help a senior citizen get help when they are unable to call for help themselves. The most common type of senior alert system is essentially a call button like you’ve seen by hospital beds.

Fall Detection Technology for Senior Medical Alert Systems

If you’re the caregiver for an elderly person who is at high risk of falling and serious injury you shouldn’t rely on technical gadgets alone.  These devices are wonderful but can’t replace the value of a trained home health aide, for those high-risk cases. If your elderly loved one is truly high-risk, sometimes a senior care facility is your only choice unless you can provide 24 hour a day supervision and safety.

Senior alert systems are useful for the vast majority of aging adults who choose to live at home and do not require 24 hour day medical supervision. The simple call button feature is adequate for the vast majority of users. These monitoring devices are easy to wear around the rest or in a pendant around the neck and they’re very unobtrusive. Because are easy to wear an easy-to-use most seniors will wear them on a regular basis.

Medical Monitoring Equipment

Unlike typical medical alert bracelets, a medical monitoring alert system provides a higher degree of safety for the elderly. These small and comfortable devices are worn over the chest and require skin contact with a sensor so it can monitor the body’s vital functions. The system automatically sends an alert if it detects a fall.  The patient does not have to push a button.

Some companies promote products with automatic fault detection, but many of these devices require the monitor to receive a very violent jolt in order to trigger a call. They can’t detect if the elderly patient slowly slumps down or if their heart rate drastically changes.
